Buyer's guide

How to choose the right riding lawn mower

The fastest mower is not automatically the best mower for your property. Start with terrain, gates, obstacles and actual grass area, then choose the deck and drive system that fit.

01

Lawn tractor or zero-turn

Lawn tractors offer familiar steering and better attachment versatility for hauling, bagging and seasonal work. Zero-turns save time around trees and beds on flatter properties, but demand more control practice and are not automatically better on slopes.

02

Match the deck to the property

A wider deck reduces passes on open ground but becomes awkward at gates, between beds and in storage. Measure the narrowest access point before buying. Roughly 42 inches suits many one-acre lawns; 50–54 inches becomes more useful on larger open acreage.

03

Treat terrain as a safety limit

Follow the mower manual's slope limit and mowing direction. Wet grass, drop-offs and uneven ground reduce traction. ROPS and seat belts must be used as the manufacturer specifies; never assume a zero-turn is the safest hill machine.

04

Compare gas and battery ownership

Gas models offer quick refueling and broad service familiarity. Battery riders are quieter and need less routine maintenance, but range varies with grass and terrain, and future battery cost belongs in the ownership calculation.

Safety comes before the score

Read the manufacturer's manual, use the correct protective equipment and follow all local codes. Product rankings are buying guidance, not a substitute for operating instructions.
