Our verdict

The 22kW package is the most convincing starting point for a typical whole-home project: meaningful HVAC and appliance capacity without automatically paying for the largest enclosure in the lineup. A licensed installer still needs to validate the load and fuel plan.

The 26kW package makes sense when a detailed load calculation shows that 18–22kW would force uncomfortable compromises. It is a capacity upgrade, not an automatic upgrade for every home.

Our verdict

The 14kW model can be a rational system—not a cut-rate one—when an installer intentionally prioritizes essentials and manages HVAC or other large loads. It should not be represented as unrestricted whole-home power.

Buyer's guide

How to size a whole-home standby generator

A standby generator is a permanently installed system, not a large portable generator. The right size comes from a load calculation, fuel-delivery plan, transfer equipment and local installation requirements working together.

01

Start with a professional load calculation

Square footage is not enough. An installer should inventory HVAC compressors, well and sump pumps, electric heat, water heating, cooking, EV charging and other simultaneous loads—including motor-starting demand.

02

Decide what must run together

Whole-panel transfer does not always mean every appliance can run at once. Load-management modules can temporarily shed lower-priority equipment, often making an 18 or 22kW system a better value than oversizing the generator.

03

Verify fuel and site requirements

Natural-gas meter capacity, pipe sizing, propane tank capacity, setbacks, noise rules, permits and the equipment pad can all change the project. Confirm them before ordering the generator, not after delivery.

04

Budget beyond the equipment

The listed generator price is only one part of the job. Electrical work, gas or propane work, permits, site preparation, delivery, batteries, accessories and ongoing maintenance can materially increase total installed cost.

Safety comes before the score

Read the manufacturer's manual, use the correct protective equipment and follow all local codes. Product rankings are buying guidance, not a substitute for operating instructions.
